The meeting in Peru focused on “Combating deforestation and encouraging forestry’s contribution to green growth: the role of tenure, trade and government policy.” As always, experts from around the world presented global perspectives on all of these issues.

Topics discussed

  • Role of forestry in the new “green growth” at the regional and national levels;
  • Drivers of deforestation and new efforts to address it; and
  • Tenure reforms and supporting community forestry: Status and lessons from implementation.

Field trip: Visit around Puerto Maldonado

During their stay in Puerto Maldonado, the group visited one of the 1,239 Brazilian nut concessions in Madre de Dios and learned more about how these concessions are working. The group also visited the Native Community of Infierno, located 18 km South of Puerto Maldonado. The Infierno Community, officially recognized in 1976, has 9,701 hectares, mostly covered with primary forest. Like most native communities, its main revenues come from small scale agriculture, tourism and extraction of forest resources. Infierno has also had an ecotourism concession since 1986, in collaboration with the company Rainforest Expedition. The group went to the main ecotourism lodge by foot which gave them an opportunity to see the beautiful tropical forest. Infierno is also engaged in a number of small-scale agricultural enterprises and among these is a cacao nursery that the group visited.
